The first game reserve we
visited in Tanzania was Lake Manyara National Park. We spent
two nights at the Lake Manyara Hotel, a simple lodge with a spectacular
setting. It's perched on a hill overlooking Lake Manyara, with
a swimming pool and landscaped grounds.
Baboons are common in the
area, and in fact roam freely on the grounds of the hotel. One
of our favorite memories is of lunch at the hotel. As we gathered
at the table waiting for our food to be served, a mother baboon,
baby clinging to her belly, jumped in the open window, made eye
contact with everyone seated there, grabbed a dinner roll and
raced off. She seemed to be saying, "Anybody gonna fight
me for it?"
On our morning game drive,
we saw elephants by the road even before we reached the park,
and more elephants once inside the park. We also saw Masai giraffe,
wildebeest, zebras, impalas, wart hogs, cape buffalo, waterbuck,
vervet monkeys and birds such as the silvery-cheeked hornbill.
